Dust Off That Gas Station Jacket, Kid! Universal Order Of Armageddon To Reunite!
POSTED FRIDAY 07.16.10

It's kinda hard not to say that Universal Order of Armageddon were one of the real stand-outs of early 90's hardcore the same way that you can't mention UOA in the same breath as Born Against. They were both just so important and influential at the same time. I don't think Gravity Records would even have existed without UOA. Or is that too bold a statement?

I was lucky enough to see UOA at a warehouse party in Baltimore over the holidays in....'94? Much like you'd expect me to say, they were a band that weren't even remotely appreciated during their existence, but now? They're considered.....titans, I guess?

Anyway, I would've just let their reunion be mentioned in bigger avenues, but I've not seen a peep of it anywhere. And well, you gotta prepare for your summer road trips, right?

UOA live. © James Bertram

The kind folks at Wham City have UOA reuniting on Saturday July 24 at Whartscape. Twin Stumps are even on the same stage! Yeah, I know, get pumped! And well, seeing as how one of the tapes from the legendary Chris Thomson 2009 Tape Dump was a tape simply saying "Universal Order of Armageddon DC March '94" on it I thought I'd include these live snippets of the band. I'm guessing this tape ended up in Chris's mitts because UOA drummer Brooks Headley went on to play in Mr. Thomson's Skull Control. So there...

Okay, Baltimore, kudos. But what's next? Moss Icon doing a tour with Reptile House?

It was definately too bold a statement... I'm really glad Heroin and Antioch Arrow were mentioned. But what about "CLIKATAT IKATOWI"? Also, didn't Gravity put out singles for Unwould and even Black Dice? I guess what's important here is UOA are still relevant live, even if it's temporary.

my old hardcore band played with uoa in virginia ages ago. a gaggle of posi-core kids were ripping on the singer for having mudhoney written on his back pack. not sure why, but i always think of that when i think of uoa. they went apeshit live. loved 'em...

how about an angel hair reunion?

"I don't think Gravity Records would even have existed without UOA. Or is that too bold a statement?"

Too chronologically challenged a statement, really. Heroin were the band who started Gravity Records (literally--their singer owned the label) and they were around before UOA started. In fact, the first Gravity release was a Heroin 7 inch, and the second release was a 7 inch by the pre-UOA band Lava. So yeah, you could call them the most important band on Gravity, and that would be debatable (I'd go with Antioch Arrow, personally), but they definitely did not invent that sound or make Gravity possible as a label.

Oh, and do you think you could give those MP3 files hand silk screened covers?

That's make them seem more, I dunno, nineties-ish.

Okay, how about an Ordination of Aaron/Antioch Arrow reunion tour?

Or something?

And, yes, of course you'd hear a comment like that 90s are over comment in Austin. Especially walking down Red River.

"But what's next? Moss Icon doing a tour with Reptile House?"

Ahh ha ha that'd be tight! Between this and the Cap'n Jazz reunion, it's kind of like eight to ten years ago when Mission of Burma got back together and New Order started playing Joy Division songs, and eventually it'd get to the point where even people like Metal Urbain and the Fire Engines were back, except now it's post-hardcore instead of post-punk.

Was it like manditory or something for ALL 90's post-HC guitar players to do that herky-jerky-Nutty Professor-dance routine when they played live? Ah memories!.. An over-lit Unitarian church basement filled with "concerned about issues" 20-something dudes pretending to not care about getting laid..God,I hated this fucking scene!..
Y'know, I'm glad that Chunklet in its post-magazine form has become defacto conservator of all things '90's post punk'..But didn't you guys used to clown bands like this regularly? Whats with the newfound humorless reverence all of a sudden?

It's Skull Kontrol, isn't it, Henry? Sorry, I can't help my self some times.

We asked Tonie if Moss Icon would be available for the 1000th Charm City Art Space show last year. Someone heard they'd been practicing again. He just chuckled and said, "Not yet..."

90's hardcore? I'm telling Harley Flanagan on you.

Last winter, I was walking down Red River St at around midnight in what I have worn most every night that's between 40 and 55 degrees since 1995 -- gas station jacket, scarf, watch cap. The usual for someone my age and scene-level.

This time, a kid looked at me from the door of some club and said, "Dude, the 90s are over."

I had never bee so proud to be in my mid-30s.
