I live in Portland. The bands you hated on in that list are all really popular here. Sometimes, I feel really alone in Portland.

Good list.

And to finish up, a lot of people don't live near indie record stores or know where to start looking the internet. I'm lucky enough to live near Lunchbox Records in Charlotte, NC, which is one of the best record stores I've ever been too. It's where I heard the phrase, "if you like it, you like it." What's the point of insulting people for liking music they have access to when they might not know about a lot of music that is available?

I'm guessing if bigger websites picked up on some of the bands mentioned here a lot of fans would bail on said artist and start to look for the next, smaller, no chance in hell of making it act. Why worry about other people's music?

@brian - I will listen to Animal Collective, like I've been doing for a better part of the decade. Believe it or not, it's okay to listen to more than one style or genre of music. I like Twin Stumps and Mayyors, and I like Girls, the XX, Japandroids, too. My life is perfectly fine, and I'm happy with the current state.

My point is that the anti-hipster, "my indie rock is better and less known than your indie rock" pissing contest is ridiculous. A lot of people don't prove themselves to be any better than the hipsters they rage against with their empty insults. They sound like high school jocks, which is kind of sad.
Posted by Jessie @ 12/27/2009 02:21 AM

i find anti-hipsters more annoying than hipsters now...yes we know hipsters suck, blah blah... and animal collective should be the only one on your last list, maybe radiohead too
Posted by notjohndoe @ 12/25/2009 02:59 AM

I actually really liked the XX's "Crystalised," though not the entire album.

Captured Tracks fandom seconded. I've only heard a few artists on the label, but those artists are among my faves (Dum Dum Girls, Grass Widow, Brilliant Colors, Mayfair Set).

@Wretched--Yeah, I wanted to like the Dirty Projectors record, but just couldn't. I think a lot of it is his voice; it's really grating, and I can put up with a lot of things. But, while I'm lost past able to grow a ponytail, I will say that, despite the majority opinion here, I liked the Animal Collective record, just not as much as I was told to. The Horrors, as well. I know it's all been done before, but at this point, what hasn't been?
@Phil---good call on Pissed Jeans. I think it's terrific. It did strike me, however, how much it sounded like Jesus Lizard on occasion. I'm assuming that nobody sees that as a bad thing?
Also, I still believe in Jay Reatard, despite myself.
Posted by F. Leghorn @ 12/22/2009 07:52 PM

I think Dirty Projectors made a good, wild, sorta unhinged rock record, despite all of the dry, academic ideas it purported to evince.

OK! I will now return to stroking my ill-advised ponytail and dropping words like "mbaqanga" into my cocktail chatter.
Posted by Wretched @ 12/21/2009 09:08 PM

Great to see someone rating those Part Chimp and Polvo records, though it's a shame you couldn't find room for the Pissed Jeans LP (which sits nicely alongside Obits in terms of re-establishing Sub Pop's rock credentials)

Also cheers for turning me onto Pride Parade. If You See Her Say Hello is the best track I've heard all year.
Posted by Phil @ 12/21/2009 08:19 PM

Well, can't say as I've heard much on the hit list ( Obits, Fresh & Onlys & Box Elders all work for me, too ), but there's no question the reissues really hit the spot. It was the first time I'd ever gotten to hear the Feelies, and I really loved 'em. I'd also throw in the Swervedriver records ( I think this year ), Monks, Vince Taylor ( crazy 60's rockabilly limey) and, passe as it may seem, those Beatles remasters really do sound great. I wish I was a millionaire to buy the mono editions.
I can't argue with much on the 'fuck off' list; that Dirty Projectors record is a hate crime. This beard issue is a real one; Brooklyn must be destroyed.
Bless you Henry.

This is one of best years, ever, as far as killer reissues go: Pylon, Jesus Lizard, Feelies, Big Star, and Sun Ra all in one year! However, Henry, you left out Zero Boys' reissue of Vicious Circle and PiL's reissue of Second Edition. And even though it was released in November of last year The Nerves' One Way Ticket still counts for this year in my book.

Add Phoenix to the crap list!

@D I should've just said anything on Goner because that Box Elders LP is pretty great too. And @Dirtwolf I thought the King Tuff album came out last year. Honest. I've sold many people on that album. And Hunx? Just not my thing. Bone Awl? Saw them this year and wasn't entirely blown away. Just kinda "eh". The records are similarly "eh".
Posted by h2o @ 12/20/2009 10:15 AM

I know you said anything on Douchemaster but cococoma too. best year for them, babies an all

DOOD! HUNX AND HIS PUNX?? good. King Tuff? GOOOOD
Agree with most of the rest tho. Although I thought Baroness was BORRRRRRRRINg.... Mayyors were just ok (but I wish I had seen them live and that may have changed my mind).
How about some of the "rawer" metal acts? Bone Awl, Volahn come to mind first.

apropos vice records....i thought I'd see pierced arrows in that list too
Posted by sami @ 12/19/2009 08:25 PM

Don't forget to add Sunset Rubdown, Girls, and whoever is the flavor of the month over at Vice Records to that Hipsters Fuck Off list.
Posted by Michael Higginbotham @ 12/19/2009 03:25 PM

It's like you're flippin through my albums, very nice list. The Ganglians have my attention this year as well.
Posted by Cheri Effin Pi @ 12/19/2009 12:35 PM

@Henry, okay, fair enough. It's just that they topped like every two & three bit list in the world this year.

Feelies reissues? MIA? (They do sound 1000x better).
Posted by billy @ 12/19/2009 12:12 PM

@ Jessie- Please go listen to some Animal Collective for me. Shit know I can't.

Hipsters, Fuck Off With Your Sub-Par Predictable Rehash Bullshit Muzak Already list still needs AC on it. One of the worst over hyped pieces of shit.

twin stumps have been kicking my ass lately, they've got to play here!great band.
I've been feeling uneasy about the wooden shjips for a long time now though, wonder what'll happen to that quease..
Posted by sami @ 12/19/2009 12:00 PM

@Billy: I blew off Animal Collective this year because, well, isn't hating them just so 2008?
Posted by h2o @ 12/19/2009 10:59 AM

HEY! - if the Twin Stumps & Wizard Smoke combined forces, they could be a Stump Wizards cover band! (nerd index on that joke? A hefty 9.4)
Posted by billy @ 12/19/2009 10:51 AM

Wow, people are really coming out for that Twin Stumps record lately. Nice to see things happening for those guys.
Posted by Brushback @ 12/19/2009 07:35 AM

Don't look now, but Pitchfork likes Circulatory System, too. You better throw that under the hipster blah blah blah list. You're definitely much better than Pitchfork though, especially given your "holier than thou, my music is better than your music (even though most of it is rehash bullshit from a scene that's come and gone)" attitude that they just so happen to also share.

Hey... how about you challenge them to a merit battle, too, since they haven't challenged your merit yet either? Keep on fighting the good fight. The world needs more people to tell them the best way to enjoy music is through another pretentious music site.
Posted by Jessie @ 12/19/2009 03:58 AM

Three quick points, if I may.

1. Cheap Trick, great album. But they did commit the sin of opening w/ a cover. Detract 1/2 star.

2. Can "Death" be consider a reissue, when it was never "issued" in the 1st place? Just a question.

3. How Animal Collective missed the "Hipsters, Fuck Off With Your Sub-Par Predictable Rehash Bullshit Muzak Already" list is a Robert Stack like mystery.

It's all yours pal.
(BTW - if I do a 2009 wrap-up it will most certainly induce lawsuits.)
Posted by billy @ 12/19/2009 02:08 AM

I enjoyed Double Dagger too
Posted by Michael Higginbotham @ 12/19/2009 01:39 AM

Great list, as expected, Henry. I'm especially happy to see that I wasn't the only one that really enjoyed the new Cheap Trick album.
