The Jesus Lizard Debut at ATP (You're Welcome)
POSTED SATURDAY 06.06.09

So yeah, I recorded both shows at ATP by The Jesus Lizard like a fucking nerd. So yeah, they were BEYOND FUCKING BELIEF. So yeah, I was in the pit with the hoi polloi the entire time and worth every goddamned bump and bruise. So yeah, I've received about fifty emails asking for me to repost the second show.

But you know what? I'm going to do it one better, here's the link to download the recording of the first night. (A fixed Sendspace link......) Circulate far and wide and crank to maximum volume.

And hey, since Paste Magazine can shamelessly hold out their hat asking for handouts, instead of us doing that (lame), why not go and buy something in the Chunklet store. See? We don't need to GIVE shit away (although we do). Come on, take one for the team, dammit!

As fun as all the other bands had been on day one the real reason we all wanted to be there was to see the reformed version of The Jesus Lizard tearing everyone a new asshole.

The Jesus Lizard signed to Capitol Records in 1995. The band also recorded the song "Panic in Cicero" for the Clerks soundtrack, and made appearances at Lollapalooza. Impressed by his work on The Melvins's Stoner Witch album, the band hired producer Garth Richardson to record their next record, Shot, in 1996. While rumors that Albini refused to work with the band due to their involvement with a major label persisted, both Albini and the group have stated this to be false

While never finding much mainstream success, the Jesus Lizard have been called "a leading noise rock band in the American independent underground…[who] turned out a series of independent records filled with scathing, disembowelling, guitar-driven pseudo-industrial noise, all of which received positive reviews in underground music publications and heavy college-radio play.

The band began in Austin, TX, when guitarist Duane Denison recruited David Yow, formerly of Scratch Acid, to play bass on some songs he wanted to record. Yow suggested that he sing and have former Scratch Acid bassist David Wm. Sims play bass instead. The resultant group took its name from a common nickname for the basilisk, a type of lizard that can run on water. The trio rehearsed several times in Austin with a drum machine. Yow and Sims moved to Chicago in 1988 and Denison followed suit the next year.

Hoi polloi. Unless you're making a clever in-joke by playing on the name of the band Oi Polloi in which case you're forgiven.

I remember those Phoenix shows dear Mr. Schriner is talking about. Arizona was always a good place for heckling. Something about the dry heat and relative isolation that makes for a brazen bunch of desert bastards. Just ask George Tabb.

Years later, when I ran into Yow at Touch and Go 25, I mentionned that I had seen them play in Phoenix a couple of times and he immediately apologized. For a 4 foot tall man with a 9 foot tall set of lungs (and a rather impressive, public penis) I thought that to be a classy move. As for Simms . . .

sorry to hear the tales of woe.

pleeez repost the YSI, we were due to have Qui tour Australia a couple of months ago. this is as close as i might get. they did the BDO here years ago. and enjoyed these guys.

that ATP Nick Cave curated was cool but didn't have bands like this. it's unlikely we will get another one, or at least bands like this in the middle of the bush.

are those finger-poke bruises on Yow's back?

If people are willing to give you money, why not take it? Seems logical enough. I mean, you offered this free Jesus Lizard show and I'm downloading it. Also logical. Handouts are handouts. Thanks for the music, by the way.

Jeez Bob, sorry to hear all that. But great songs aye?

I remember David Simms having to go get their doorman size ape to try to intimidate us as he demanded all the money shamelessly in front of two bands who were making shit anyway. They didn't get what they were asking for.

The nerve of those fucking shits. They had a soundman with them a crew and this attitude like they were about to hit the big time. I'm glad to see their major label time did nothing to endear them to more people.

The next time through town, they played a smaller venue to fewer people. During their set Simms got a deserved and savage heckling. After a few songs that fucking garden gnome was hiding behind his cabinet for the rest of the night. What a bad ass.
Posted by Bob Schriner @ 06/06/2009 06:57 PM

Oh how I used to love this band in that magical decade that was the 90s. That is until they came to town and proved themselves to be total shitheads. I helped a friend do a show with them, where among other things, I met Brainiac for the first time as they "snuck" on tour with GVSB who were still making $100 a night.

The JL guys raided the beer and food set aside for GVSB and Seam and had the nerve to demand MORE! They pranced around like fucking smug frat boys and when show time came they were piss drunk and giggling as they fucked off through 8 or so songs. Then after essentially robbing the people who paid to see them, they demanded all the money from the door. cont...
