Top 20 US Hardcore....WTF?!
POSTED FRIDAY 09.19.08

So I came across this article, and I was immediately taken aback by a number of really startling picks for the top 20 hardcore bands from America.

Now, I certainly don't consider myself an authority, but to think that Mr. Sherburne does is a bit unnerving.

I sent this link to Billy from Shake It, and his response was:

For starters:
THE GERMS
Not HC and that album sucks (No. 1 !?).

POISON IDEA
RECORD COLLECTORS ARE PRENTIOUS ASSHOLES  - great band , lousy record. Everybody picks it for the title.

MINUTEMEN
DOUBLE NICKELS ON THE DIME - In NO WAY HC, not even close in any "intellectual" stretch...and one should not use intelligence and HC in the same sentence.

HÜSKER DÜ
ZEN ARCADE  - once gain not a HC album. Was this list made by some 24 year old putz? And if you're going to play the Dü card you play Metal Circus anyway, duh.

RITES OF SPRING
Okay, this is getting OLD. Not a HC record, nor band. A great band, but NOT a hardcore punk band, no matter how many 'zines this guy read.

BIG BLACK
SONGS ABOUT FUCKING - Now he/she is just being a dick?

EYEHATEGOD
TAKE AS NEEDED FOR PAIN - I shouldn't even have to explain this to a Pitchfork writer? Plus everybody knows "Dope Sick" is the shit for EHG.

BIKINI KILL
THE CD VERSION OF THE FIRST TWO RECORDS - Obviously now we're dealing with a Liberal Arts major, somewhere on the Western seaboard, dunce.

BORN AGAINST
BATTLE HYMNS OF THE RACE WAR - "Legendary" and "Virginia" in the same breath? That's a big "NO" unless you're talking about Thomas Jefferson.

HEROIN
HEROIN - Oh for Christ's sake, I give up.

Die Kreuzen?! HELLO?????????????

And upon sending the link to the kids in Sex/Vid, RJ's response was even more harsh:

That list is the WORST! Jesus Christ!
1) Bubba Dupree did NOT SING IN VOID! How can someone who does not even know the singer of a band feel qualified to make a "top ___" list of ANYTHING?! That would be like me saying "when Jimmy Page screams 'I've been dazed and confused,' it's so powerful!!!"
2) Yes, the Negative Approach 7" was mega-influential and its importance cannot be understated, but NYHC would have happened without it. The Bad Brains were already there doing their work. It would have been better for him to say something like "good hardcore MIGHT not have happened without the FIX" aka best band ever.
3) NO BOSTON HARDCORE? XCLAIM! Released some of the the best records of the era. They did not have a bad release, SSD both 12" DYS brotherhood, FU's both 12", JERRYS KIDS is this my world. Also, bands like Negative FX , Last Rights, fuck, I mean wtf?
4) That is the wrong Born Against album. He should have put the singles collection.
5) THE DEAD KENNEDYS  SUCK DICK.
6) MDC is good, but boring as fuck. And by 'good' I mean, play it once every year and be like "why am I jamming this when I could jamming.....(which leads me to lucky number 7)
7) DRI DEALING WITH IT IS THE BEST RECORD EVER!
8) COC dude. Where the fuck is Eye for an Eye? Not EYEHATEGOD. EYE FOR AN EYE.
9) I reiterate: BUBBA DUPREE DID NOT SING IN VOID. "Man, when Keith Richards screams 'please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and fame" it just GETS ME EVERYTIME!!!
10) He picked the right Misfits album. THAT'S ALL HE HAS. He picked the best Misfits LP. Hooray for him.

Discuss.

Comments:
All you guys are morons. You guys are the reason hardcore sucks.

I thought it was a nice list.... It branches out way more musically compared to the hc-neantherals responces. "punk" usually gets used these days with the precursor of "that's not. No wonder it's dead.

agnostic front. stutter

i blame the"american hardcore" doc.
Posted by eric @ 09/26/2008 03:07 AM

I think what we're talking about is the complimentary counting principle of rock.

Say n(U)=punk rock

n(A')=not hardcore

so n(U)-n(A')=hardcore

There you go. Math Rockin' It!!!

Kaleb: What, assaulting us with boring music isn't enough? Talk about overrated. Low: "Let's play really slow and boring music."
Rock critics: "Genius!"
Low: No, I'm tired of that. Let's rip off Arcwelder circa '93.
Rock critics: "Genius again!"

Joe, I'm bitching about what ISN'T hardcore, and how your bad your mom's rim jobs are, speaking of dentures. BUT THANKS FOR YOUR MONEY! Now I can make another monthly Ebay payment on my JUDGE 7" !!! Whoa Hoo!
Posted by billy @ 09/23/2008 11:59 AM

Aww, look at all the old foggies bickering about what hardcore is. Hardcore sucks now, right? It just isn't the same, back when you guys invented it, is it? Wave your out-of-print 7" in the air and bitch until your dentures fall out. It's OK, I believe you, you were THERE, beating your sexual frustrations out on your guitar and screaming about politics you STILL don't have a handle on. You guys were the original TUFF stuff.

That guy's list is dumb, but you guys aren't doing much better. Why don't we just go back to arguing what "punk" is?
Got my Rock Bible today - mmm, good.
Posted by Joe @ 09/23/2008 11:07 AM

What's your beef with Heroin though? The 12" is great.
Posted by smr @ 09/22/2008 11:03 PM

Can we please not overlook that the man referred to Black Flag's debut album as "Rise Above"?

I recently was asked my 10 favorite albums for a job application and I am proud as a peach to have included Vicious Circle. It. Never. Gets. Old.
Posted by smr @ 09/22/2008 11:01 PM

yeah, proletariat might be stretching things a bit...perhaps the jerry's kids record is more "trad" hardcore, but just stating my preferences there. As far as DOA is concerned, tough to pigeonhole them for one great record, so i put the comp on there...seems to be OK according to pitchfork's standards.

if naked raygun's throb throb isn't hardcore, then i don't know what is. whatever it is, it puts hardcore to shame. i dunno, that's my list. take it or leave it or make your own list ffs.
Posted by lazar @ 09/22/2008 04:08 PM

is it possible that this dude compiles, in his head, all the music that he listened to at any given time of his life into one - albeit wrong - subgenre? i know i do that with hardcore. granted, i was in on the, what was prolly the 4th or 5th wave by then (1992/3-ish)? but there are many bands i'd tell you were hardcore, who could be more accurately described as ska-punk or pop-punk or, to get technical, emo or screamo or noise or shoegaze or a ton of other things.

this is not to say, however, that i think this guy knows for a minute what he's talking about. um... husker du? heroin? wait... is this a fucking joke?
Posted by sassyassy @ 09/22/2008 03:44 PM

Amen to Die Kruezen and Zero Boys.

I'd maybe say Dicks, too, if we're gonna talk about the Big Boys.

Still...yeah, I think it was something that came and went at least long before I was hanging out. Somewhere along the way, it came to mean bad jock metal.

Ah well...that list probably came from some guy who came of age when rock writers were adding the suffix '-core' to every fucking thing. That whole thing, unfortunately, started with fanzine writers who'd spent the later eighties and nineties trying to rescusitate the corpse, as opposed to anything truly productive- like nailing the coffin shut.

Where are the Middle Class EP and the Sluts 12"EP?!!!!!
Posted by Pahomije @ 09/22/2008 10:28 AM

Although I could include Cro Mags and a couple choice releases after '84 (if I were in a pinch), I completely agree, Dave.

Funny though, a kid in a local Atlanta band started talking about the Karp/Rye 12" split as "hardcore" to which I just shook my head. Are these kids nowadays out of their fucking skulls?!
Posted by henry @ 09/21/2008 11:56 PM

Almost everything after 1984 shouldn't even be considered. And I wouldn't call The Proletariat or Naked Raygun hardcore, either.
Posted by Brushback @ 09/21/2008 11:11 PM

I'm surprised that list didn't slip in The Replacements' "Sorry Ma". That's not hardcore, either...
Posted by Eric @ 09/21/2008 07:53 PM

i should say all thrash and punk I was emotional and didnt look at the list, much of it this old nyhc would consider punk which people would understand. Rite of Spring is bad indie rock Pitchfork Media would love i bet.

Again, come on over for a lesson as the internet ain;t teaching anyone shit about what is what
Posted by realid @ 09/21/2008 06:03 PM

Nobody ever REALLY thought Husker Du was hardcore, even in the 'day' and by the time Zen Arcade came out, they were just a band who played somewhat faster than average.

Big Black and the Minutemen? What an idiotic list...
Posted by Eric @ 09/21/2008 06:02 PM

I never even heard of Bikini Kill ranking with anyone until AP did another top 20 influential bands. Born Against didnt mean that much I was there. I consider the rest thrash and punk. Why am I even commenting?

here is my address 1935 N Fairfield, chicago, il 60647 - i will give you hardcore assbag.

I dare this guy to name one person who reads Doonesbury.
Posted by Justin @ 09/21/2008 03:02 PM

Wow. I'm a 27 year old putz and not one mention of Fang's Landshark LP. For shame.

This dipshit might as well have mentioned the first Rage Against the Machine album, or the first Guns N' Roses for that dopey matter.
Posted by Michael Higginbotham @ 09/21/2008 04:45 AM

Not to nit-pick but DOA-Bloodied but Unbowed is just a comp of the 1st two LP's rounded out by some singles etc. And they still lean towards the "punk rock" side of the pit, not hardcore. But bless their Canadian hearts anyhoo...
Posted by billy @ 09/21/2008 12:43 AM

Jesus. This is such a fucking easy one:

Bad Brains-Rock for Light
Negative Approach-Tied Down
Black Flag-Damaged
Naked Raygun-Throb Throb
GI-Joyride
Minor Threat-Out of Step
FU's-Kill for Christ
The Proletariat-Indifference
Negative FX-LP
DOA-Bloodied but Unbowed

DRI? COC!? I guess they're the "greatest hardcore" if you define "greatest" as "shittiest" and "hardcore" as "bad metal crossover for 12 yr old jock wanna-be douchebags in 1989," then, uh, I guess. Also - Boston HC sucks ass. NYHC sucks double ass. Like, ditch the homoerotic bonding and just make out, boys.
Posted by Bob @ 09/20/2008 03:10 AM

1-Bad Brains-yellow ROIR casette

2- The Void side of the Faith/Void split

Weird to see Eyehategod on that list, but they are a killer band. Dunno' about hardcore, though . . . is "sludge" still a genre?
Posted by Dave Hofer @ 09/19/2008 06:49 PM

I'm surprised Pat Boone didn't make the list.

Ass from yer elbow, brother.
Posted by bennett @ 09/19/2008 06:47 PM

1. dead kennedys - plastic surgery disasters.

others are arbitrary
Posted by g @ 09/19/2008 06:16 PM

1-20. Old Skull "Get Outta School"
Posted by Ringhoff @ 09/19/2008 06:02 PM

The absence of the Zero Boys Vicious Circle means you fucking FAIL! F-

The Faith/Void split can only count as half a record as the Faith songs eat dog food. File this record under V.

The Big Boys No Matter How... is much more worthy than half this list.

Boston Not LA, you missed Boston altogether.

Ok there are a lot of things here that are stretching the boundaries of hardcore, but Bikini Kill? Hardcore? Or even good at whatever the fuck they were? Turn your records into pogs immediately assdrip!
Posted by Bob Schriner @ 09/19/2008 05:52 PM

I'm not that hardcore literate, but I have to agree with most of Mr.Shake-Its assertations. I know that my leanings were a little on the pop-punk side. Here are a few (U.S.) Personal faves. Pretty accessible. (No articular order)

1.Minor Threat - Out of Step

2.Black Flag - My War

3.V/A - Blasting Concept (Volume 2?)

4.Cirlce Jerks - Wild In The Streets

5.Bad Brains - Band In D.C. (Roir?)

6.V/A - Someone Got Their Head Kicked In (Someone got Their Head to Believe..)

7.Seven Seconds - One plus One Live.

Warzone - Don't Forget The Struggle

8. Circle Jerks - Golden Shower of Hits

9. Youth of Today - Break Down The Walls

10.Youth Brigade - Sink With Kalifornia

Haven't you heard? Words don't mean anything anymore. You can call anything whatever you want as long as you pad it with lots of important indie-cred fulfilling back story gleaned from allmusic.com reviews about albums you were too young to hear.

Minor Threat is my favorite stonerrockdiscocore band. You can really hear how they laid the foundation for that in the tone of their guitars.
