Gatekeeper
POSTED THURSDAY 06.21.07

With all of this talk of Dan Deacon being the next Shaggs or Daniel Johnston, I thought it best to remind the twee-blog set what REAL outsider music is all about instead of this fake hipster horseshit.

About four years ago, the kids in American Analog Set laid this recording on me of a guy who came into a Guitar Center in Texas and asked for a tape to be transfered to CD. And as you can tell from this mp3, they hit  paydirt.

ONE HOUR OF A CAPPELLA SINGING ABOUT MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DISORDERS? Sign me up, kemosabe!

Just to tease you, dear chunklet.com reader, I'm only including half of the tape. However, if you're super nice......I might unleash the other half at a later date.

Ah, yes, Irwin Chusid would be proud.

Yes O.M.O.R.N.R., I have watched Tim & Eric's show and it's alot like Deacon's video except it's hilarious in a very stoner way!

Do you guys ever watch Tim and Eric?

Some of that shit's funny.

Dan Deacon as a person, performer, and persona is totally undeniable once you see him live, and if you didn't have fun at one of his shows it's probably because you were determined not to. Hipster he's not.

My, my,...so ironic (pun intended) that the "GATEKEEPER" post has all the GATEKEEPERS out and on the battle field. But kudos on the term "twatever".

I saw Dan a couple months ago opening for Parts and Labor, not really knowing what to expect. I enjoyed his show, the guy is an entertainer. He is doing his own thing, regardless of whether other people have made music similar or not. It's too bad a guy can't just have fun with his music and give people a good time and not piss off people that are so much hipper than "hipsters". Twatever.

That Dan Deacon video is a pathetic rip-off of
this
far superior number
.

are we sure these aren't actually morrissey demos?

Yeah I caught his video, not very good.

Weren't hipster mullets and moustaches already considered passe back in '04?

Let's hope that Dan Deacon will be the final driving nail into the coffin of hipster culture.

NOTHING great or bold about this douchebag. "Cool video, glad that YouTube featued it, it's original" Oh yeah? Devo used those visuals in a video that they filmed nearly 30 years ago. "Oooh, his live sets are great, people dancing all around him and all the energy" Guess what, shithead? Lightning Bolt and Locust and whatever now defunct noise rock duo were doing that back in '02. "He is a true performer, bold and original" No wrong again. I've lived in Chicago for the past 6 years and I've seen countless acts at the Empty Bottle or Schubas or whatever, and it's practically the same fucking guy with synthesizers, like a one-man Kraftwerk cover band, playing crappy electronic music, jumping around like a buffoon.

I'm actually glad Dan Deacon's around, because his existence shows just how shitheaded hipsters REALLY are.

Dude. This tape has electronic voice phenomena all over it. I just heard a dead kid tell me to avoid steak or something.

Yeah. I'm gonna go to his "performance" here in town next week just to make a qualified opinion. However, it's really fucking annoying to see pimply faced taste maker hacks try and paint him as the next Wesley Willis when, in fact, it's just poorly executed synth pop with a video that has sold it. And has anybody noticed that the video is a low-budget/low-creativity version of something that Load Records would do?

Sounds like the guy was trying to write a musical (or rock opera?) and these are just sketches, like things you whisper into a recorder to remember later.

Sounds like Deacon is trying to play the Andrew WK card, but problem is there's no beef in the music. He's playing my friend's house in a month, so I might be collecting your $2, Billy.

Whoops, I visited his page just now and he took that bit off. But I still stand by what I think. It doesn't look like he's changed much since then.

If you think Dan Deacon is even TRYING to be outsider music, then you've missed the point entirely.

It even says on his myspace page that he's trying to make his music accessible to the masses (not exact words but close enough).

I will pay ONE DOLLAR to the first person who slaps Dan Deacon right in his phony-baloney cake hole. I will pay TWO DOLLARS to the first person who puts a fat, knockin' beat behind this poor bastards ramblings. Guy's probably the fucking VP of VICE right now.
